In life, we all have a story. And sometimes, to understand where we want to go, we have to take a step back and reflect on where we’ve been. This Tree of Life exercise is a gentle guide for you to explore your story with empathy, awareness, and intention.
Let’s build your Tree of Life together, piece by piece, to see what’s shaped you and where you're heading.
Roots: Where Do You Come From?
Your roots are your foundation. They represent the people, places, and experiences that have shaped who you are. This might include the culture you were raised in, influential people in your life, or communities that have supported you. Take a moment to reflect—who and what has made you, you?
- Reflection: Who have been your most important influences? What values did they instill in you?
Ground/Soil: What Grounds You?
Your ground is what keeps you steady. These are your daily practices, routines, and the people or activities that give you strength. What are the habits or relationships that nourish you and keep you grounded in the here and now?
- Reflection: What practices bring you calm or strength? Where do you draw support from?
Trunk: Your Values
The trunk of your tree represents your values—those core principles and beliefs that guide you. Think about the qualities and strengths that define you. What are the values that stand strong at the center of your life?
- Reflection: What do you stand for? What values are non-negotiable in your life?
Branches: Your Hopes and Dreams
The branches of your tree represent your aspirations. These are the hopes, dreams, and wishes that stretch out toward the future. Your dreams can be both personal and collective—big or small. What do you see reaching for?
- Reflection: What are you aiming for in the short and long term? What dreams are waiting to take shape?
Leaves: Your Inheritance
Your leaves represent the legacies passed on to you. These are the people who have positively impacted your life and the qualities they left behind—perhaps it’s courage, kindness, or wisdom. What has been passed down to you?
- Reflection: Who has influenced you for the better? What legacies are you carrying forward?
Fruits: Your Accomplishments
Your fruits are your achievements—the things you’ve done that make you proud. These might be professional successes, personal victories, or even internal growth. What have you accomplished that makes you feel good about yourself?
- Reflection: What are your proudest moments? How do these achievements align with your values?
Flowers and Seeds: The Legacy You’ll Leave
Your flowers and seeds are the legacies you wish to leave behind. What do you want to pass on to others? How do you hope to impact the people around you or the world at large?
- Reflection: What legacy do you hope to create? How do you want to be remembered?
Replanting Your Tree
After reflecting on your Tree of Life, consider what it would be like to replant it. If you could start fresh, what would you want to add to your roots, soil, or branches? Maybe you’d change nothing at all, or maybe you see new possibilities. Either way, this reflection allows you to nurture the tree that represents your life.
- Reflection: If you could replant your tree, would you? What would you keep the same, and what would you change?
