Embracing Control and Letting Go
Change can make us feel like we are out of the driver’s seat. One way to regain your power is to evaluate what you can and can’t control. You can’t control what’s going on with others, your environment, etc. But if you really dig into what your needs are (they change daily!) you will be able to do something to nourish those needs.
You will be put back into control. To honor those needs, you must set boundaries with yourself and others.
You Get to Choose
When you look through a lens of “what I can control,” new possibilities start to come into focus. You get to choose. This next exercise is split up into two parts.
We invite you to approach this with curiosity and possibility. This is simply a first step into an exploration, with no pressure, and with lots of grace. There aren’t any “right” answers, and your answers
will likely evolve over time.
When you feel yourself getting uncomfortable - YAY! This means that you’re hitting on something that needs to be addressed. If you begin to experience unease, take a break and turn to your trusty Grounding Toolkit.
Part 1. "I’m Stuck."
-
Give yourself permission to say “I’m stuck.” By acknowledging that you feel stuck, you have already released yourself by speaking this truth. What else are you afraid to say out loud right now?
-
Start to make a list of what is making you feel stuck. Do you feel weighed down by something in particular?
-
Does something in your life feel messy?
-
Ask yourself, how do I want to feel? When, and where, have I felt this way in my life?
-
What makes you feel most alive? When is the last time you felt that way?
-
What did you love to do when you were a kid?
-
What is tugging on your heart? What is asking to be realized?
-
Give yourself permission to write down where you want to go.
-
Understand why it might feel messy.
-
Ask yourself if you want it?
-
How can you go and get it?
The Game Plan
You just did a really deep dive into what your heart is calling you to do. Now it is time to make a plan! Remember, the first step is always the hardest. If you can imagine yourself doing it, there is a way forward. This is where we make those day-dreams a reality.
Fill out the flow chart below to help you make a plan. The chart is also attached to this tool in printable format, if you’d like to fill it out time and time again.
