Living a life of purpose– a universally strived for concept, yet one that is deeply personal and unique to each individual. In our opinion, living a life of purpose isn't about chasing perfection or constantly striving for more; it's about tuning into what truly matters to you and aligning your decisions and actions with those values. It often begins with compassion—compassion for yourself as you explore what brings you meaning, and compassion for others as you find ways to connect and contribute. While it’s impossible to know everyone’s journey to fulfillment, these guiding principles can help you live with greater intention, authenticity, and joy.
1. Life is messy. We are all imperfect. Show up anyways.
Sometimes, it’s natural to wish that life came with a sage, an instruction manual, or a crystal ball. The unpredictability of life is one of our greatest challenges, but it’s also one of our greatest gifts. One of the first tenets of living with purpose is understanding that there will always be twists and turns, challenges and obstacles, and surprises along the way—but choosing to show up and give your best effort regardless.
2. Life is a vast spectrum, and only you have the power to see it as a rainbow.
Embracing this uncertainty with grace allows you to grow and evolve. Purpose isn’t about having everything figured out; it’s about finding meaning in the journey itself. Each new experience, whether joyful or challenging, contributes to your personal story, offering you the opportunity to deepen your connection with yourself and the world around you. You don’t have to enjoy every circumstance, but you do have the choice to embrace each season of life and let it offer you lessons and opportunities—you just have to be willing to show up. With every intentional step, you move closer to living a life that feels on purpose.
3. Be present
Living on autopilot is not living on purpose. Our brains are wired to find shortcuts, constantly simplifying situations to make life easier. But in doing so, we risk disconnecting from the very moments that shape us. Practicing presence is essential if you want to be an active participant in your own life. When you show up fully for yourself and others, it allows for a deeper, more meaningful experience—whether you're navigating joy or pain. Living a life of purpose means recognizing the richness in this full spectrum of emotions and experiences, and embracing it all rather than shying away.
One of the biggest ways we disconnect from these lived experiences is by losing ourselves in our phones. Life isn't meant to be consumed through a screen but created through the day-to-day moments for which we're truly present. Purpose is found in those “small” moments—in the conversations, connections, and experiences that shape who we are. Here are a few examples of how to be present:
- Engage your senses
- Engage in a meaningful conversation
- Compliment someone
- Get outside
- Notice small details
- Notice yourself smiling
4. Understand your why
When you know your "why" and have a clear understanding of your core values, life never truly goes off course. Your values act as your anchors, preventing you from drifting too far from who you truly are. If something feels "off," it's often your subconscious sending out signals that you're straying from your authentic self. Those who learn to tune into this inner voice are more likely to experience life as one lived in alignment with their purpose.
Living with your "why" in mind allows you to release control over outcomes and instead focus on the journey itself. Life is a series of countless little journeys, each filled with lessons, growth, and opportunities. When speaking with individuals who have "made it," they often reflect on the fulfillment they found not in the final result, but in the process—the journey is where they discovered meaning. Living a life of purpose means keeping your north star aligned with your core values, embracing the twists and turns, and finding peace in knowing that you're staying true to your path.
5. When you look, you will find
Lastly, those who choose to see events, people, and experiences as meaningful will feel that their life is full of meaning. While this might seem obvious, far too many people live waiting for meaning to arrive, rather than realizing that their life is meaning. This is, at its core, the practice of gratitude. When we allow ourselves to recognize the significance in everyday moments, our lives become richer, deeper, and more fulfilling.
Give yourself permission to find meaning in the ordinary and the extraordinary—be inspired by art, by people, by experiences, and by conversations. Notice the who, what, when, and where of your moments of joy. These are the moments that, when reflected upon, will shine as the most purposeful parts of your life. They are the quiet yet profound building blocks of a life well-lived. The key is to pay attention and to be open to finding meaning where you might not expect it. When you look for meaning, you'll discover that it’s been there all along, woven into the fabric of your daily life, just waiting to be seen.
